W:. Ken James Sr. celebrates 50 years in Masonry

Ken James 50 Years

What a great night! We had a night of Sutherland Lodge living history as we presented W:. Ken James his 50 year pin and certificate. From Sutherland Lodge's oldest living Past Master, W:. Charlie Jones 1951, to the current Master, W:. Brian Campbell 2010, and many brothers in between gave W:. James a small token of their love and respect through the warm words that were shared.

PALM HARBOR, FL, USA (May 2, 2010) - The Brothers of Dunedin Lodge No. 192 F.& A.M. were finally able to wrestle the coveted "Chico" softball trophy away from Sutherland Lodge No. 174 F.& A.M. at Putnam Park in Palm Harbor. The softball game is intended to promote inter-Lodge camaraderie, and generate money for the Grand Master's Charity, which this year is the Johnnie B. Byrd, Sr. Alzheimer’s Center & Research Institute.

The captains for the two teams were the Worshipful Masters of the Lodges; W:. Mike Wilson for Dunedin, and W:.Brian Campbell for Sutherland. The umpires for the game came from District 21; R:.W:.Rick Hoover, PM, PDI, PDDGM of Nitram Lodge No. 188 F.& A.M., and W:.Alan Rosenthal, PM of St. Petersburg Lodge No. 139 F.& A.M. The official scorekeeper was Bro. Dick Brown of Dunedin. Prior to the start of the game, W:.Jarvis Wood, PM of Sutherland delivered the invocation. The Chico Commissioner, W:.Tim Bryce, PM made the introductions. Also on hand to throw out the first pitch was the District 20 District Deputy Grand Master, R:.W:.Chris Schlenker, PM.

The "Chico" award was intended to be a traveling trophy, whereby any Lodge in Districts 20 & 21 can challenge the Lodge currently in possession of the trophy. The softball game primarily follows ASA rules with some minor modifications (consult Tim Bryce). The winning team donates to the current Grand Master's Charity pursuant to the game in the name of the Chico Cup Challenge.

This particular game lasted seven innings with Dunedin winning 15-8. Afterwards W:.Brian Campbell of Sutherland graciously turned the "Chico" trophy over to W:.Mike Wilson of Dunedin. According to W:.Campbell, "This was a fun competition for a good cause. There was a lot of Brotherhood here today and a great way to involve our families and friends." Dunedin's W:.Wilson echoed these sentiments and added, "Dunedin welcomes any challenger from Districts 20 and 21."

There have been other "Chico" games over the years. The current records for the Lodges participating are:

Clearwater Lodge No. 127 - (0-1)
Dunedin Lodge No. 192 - (1-1)
Sutherland Lodge No. 174 (2-1)

Unity Gavel

On March 9th we made our last delivery for the current DDGM’s new unity gavel. It went to Clearwater Lodge. I would like to thank the nine (9) brothers who participated in this event. Unfortunately, thirteen (13) of Dunedin’s brothers were present so we were not able to bring the traveling gavel back to Sutherland. We did, however, have more first time visitors than Dunedin. It seems that the unity gavel is a success. If any of you new brothers have not visited other lodges I highly recommend checking one of them out. Visiting another lodge is a good way to experience the strong bond we have as Masons. You can walk into a room of strangers and feel like you have known the people there your whole life.

For those of you that did not hear, we hosted the March meeting for Masters and Wardens on the 17th. I am pleased to say Sutherland hospitality was flowing freely. Everyone I spoke with was very happy with the venue and we were able to maintain our reputation of providing excellent refreshment, thanks to our Junior Warden’s exceptional menu.

Can you help find new chairs?

We are looking to replace our existing Master and Warden chairs as part of the Second Century Project. Below are some of the chairs that others have suggested but none have provided yet.. We need a total of three (3) chairs which do not need to match and can be in any shape, as long as they can be repaired, refinished or are ready to be placed.

A metal donation plate will be attached to each chair identifying the donor and their words of choice, if so desired by the donor. We need your help in finding suitable chairs and look forward to seeing you at lodge for their dedication.

What is a Mason?

That's not a surprising question. Even though Masons (Freemasons) are members of the largest and oldest fraternity in the world, and even though almost everyone has a father or grandfather or uncle who was a Mason, many people aren't quite certain just who Masons are.

The answer is simple. A Mason (or Freemason) is a member of a fraternity known as Masonry (or Freemasonry). A fraternity is a group of men (just as a sorority is a group of women) who join together because:
